The Mahavishnu Orchestra - The Inner Mounting Flame. The greatest jazz record ever. On Mahavishnu’s debut LP John McLaughlin proves not just that he is a freak of nature on the guitar but also that he can write for all instruments. To me the the fact that John wrote the entire album is the most insane part. He hears the music for all instruments so well and defined. The melodies and time signatures he presents are heavily influenced by the years he spent living and meditating in India. And yet he still manages to weave it together with a more European and classical overtone, and all of it of course dipped in the blues. It’s like McLaughlin and Miles always said: “without the blues there is no jazz.” John compiled the very best musicians from around the world to accomplish the mammoth task of playing his work (something he still does till this day.) All of the musicians (#johnmclaughlin on guitar #billycobham on drums #ricklaird on bass #janhammer on keys and more importantly MOOG and finally #jerrygoodman on violin) are absolute masters and virtuosos at their particular instrument. I can’t say enough good about this band or McLaughlin. I was so fortunate to be able to see him not a few months ago at the Orange Peel. It was a bit crazy to be watching a man play that was respected by and jammed with Hendrix. #jimihendrix #mahavishnuorchestra #themahavishnuorchestra #moog #trippy #jazzy #psychedelic #favorites #vscocam @the_orange_peel #vinyl #vinyljunkie #vinylcollection #recordcollection #lp #nowspinning #record #favorites
